Professor Canute of the U of Memphis Law School is commanding the tide to stop rolling in with her ban on laptops in the classroom. She offers the reason that students are trying to capture every word of her lectures (although if that were the case I think they might bring tape recorders to class). "The computers interfere with making eye contact. You've got this picket fence between you and the students." The real problem is that she is still lecturing instead of engaging students in a discussion. Transcribing lecture notes is no way to learn the law; the real picket fence is her model of how learning occurs.
